- Summary
-
- "When you think of the air force, some of the first things that come to mind may be pilots and their aircraft. Pilots are actually one of the smallest groups of people in the air force. They are supported by other members of aircrew and by a dedicated team of ground staff, who help the aircrew. Without the backup of engineers, mechanics, radar operators, and air traffic controllers, pilots would not be able to fly their missions safely, if at all"--page [4]
- About the Defend and protect series: "Many men and women feel called to serve their country in the armed forces. They join the countless ranks of those who have defended and protected people at home and around the world in both peace and wartime. Not all serve as soldiers in the army, though. Depending on skills and interests, they might join the personnel of the special forces, air force, navy, undercover operations, or the police. This in-depth series takes readers into the various branches of the armed forces, highlighting the unique attributes of each and the requirements needed to succeed in diverse positions. "Take the Test" sections in each volume allow readers to assess and review their understanding of the content. Sidebars stress training techniques and prerequisites for success. Dynamic photographs add excitement and interest to this high-interest topic. Series provides opportunities to exercise Common Core informational and foundational reading skills"--https://www.garethstevens.com/series/Defend-and-Protect
