- NicolaÌs ValdeÌs has not shown any signs of life since the mutilator of Mors' last appearance, when six people were violently murdered. The inspector has been missing for a year, the murderer is still at large, and a tense sense of calm reigns over Madrid. There is only one reason why NicolaÌs would return. Only one person could break that calm. The murderer has had time to prepare his big move, which will lead him to face the inspector at his last game of chess. Madrid has been at peace for far too long, and so has NicolaÌs ValdeÌs. It is time to face the end, an end that he has been awaiting for eight years: but only one of the two will remain standing
